In one of the last blogs I wrote, I was mentioning selecting an optic for my AR and had pretty set my sights on the Vortex Spitfire.  I’m still set on it, but before I buy it I decided to make my gun look nice first.  I’m good with the iron sights for the time being so the optic isn’t a “must” for me right now.  I’m a traditionalist and can appreciate the visual appeal of the “evil black rifle” but I want to customize it a bit.  If I’m stepping away from my typical Fudd ways which draw me …

If you were at Shot Show 2015 then you probably saw all the 1-6x scopes for ARs that are coming out. If you didn’t go to SHOT, like me, then you probably heard about all the new 1-6x scopes coming out. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then pay close attention.

A year or two ago, 1-4x scopes were common on ARs and 1-5x or 1-6x was a premium product. Now that 1-6x are becoming more common and available at multiple price points, the 1-8x scopes are a premium product. U.S. Optics has a 1-8 dual …

Okay, so everyone knows that I'm a wristwatch geek. I love gadgets… period! Many years ago while frequenting all the local gun shows, I started seeing pocket watches and wristwatches pop up on dealers' tables that they had taken in trade for firearms. In fact, the first really cool wristwatch I acquired was from a gun show and the "sickness" began. As a commercial sporting goods manufacturer's rep, I had a gun dealer in the Indianapolis area who had one whole showcase dedicated to wristwatches for sale or trade! Typically, someone would be given or awarded a valuable watch …

Today, we’re going to talk about some very old optics – but first, a backstory – or actually three backstories.

Backstory number one:

When I was but a wee lad and got to spend the night at my aunt and uncle’s house (Foy and Oscar), there were a couple of things that I really looked forward to.  One was their parakeet, Billy Boy, one was the cherry tree in their back yard where i would eat until sick, and – the biggest thing – getting to sleep in the bedroom of a genuine war hero – my cousin Ernest that …

This summer has been full of fun trips away from home for me.  So far I’ve logged a fishing trip to Wisconsin, a weekend trip to Indianapolis, a two week trip to Germany and Austria, and most recently a weekend trip with friends near New Buffalo, Michigan.  I decided this year as an unofficial resolution to spend my dollars on experiences and adventures as opposed to acquiring more things.  I’ve enjoyed it so far and have made a lot of new memories that will last a lifetime.  It’s probably for the better anyways since I’m starting to run out of …

While not usually my first choice, off body carrying does offer some advantages. It is not affected by your wardrobe, allows you to easily carry extra mags/accessories, and is not gun specific like holsters. With AR pistols suddenly available to those of us living in SBR "slave states", off body carry also enables those to be carried much more discretely than a full size rifle. Here are some of my choices for off body carrying.

Vertx EDC Commuter Slim Line Sling Bag

The bag is 18"x13"x6" which gives you a capacity of 23 liters. It can carry any pistol, from …

As part of the Product Intelligence Team, in a regular weekly rotation, each member is tasked with contributing two blogs to our OpticsPlanet Blog Network – one for the Binoculars Blog and one for the Optics Blog, and unless you know exactly where to look, they can be very difficult to find when navigating our website. Across the top of our Home Page is a black band that contains the OpticsPlanet.com 800 Number, Live Chat and Contact links. In addition, the same area has several other headline links, including the word "Blog"…. but oddly enough ours are not there. In …

My Dad was one of those people who believed there were two kinds of music – country and western.  Three, maybe, if you count gospel.  Anybody who is a fan of older country music knows that cheatin’ is a recurring theme in many songs, just ahead of drinkin’, pickup trucks and dogs and Mama.  An ideal country song would be something like “My dog done stole my pickup truck, but this beer shore does taste good. And ah love mah dog more than mah cheatin’ wife but I love Mama the best”, or words to that effect.

Hank’s “Your Cheatin' …

As you may have deduced, I am pro-knife. Knife enthusiasts like myself like to have a blade handy anywhere and everywhere. I put one in my pocket every morning, keep one in my vehicle, and have one in every bag. Recently, I took up kayaking as a recreational exercise. My first thought was “I need a knife to keep in my life jacket”.  If you didn’t know, prolonged exposure to water is not in a knife’s best interest. So I set out to find a knife that would withstand the elements and be ready for any job, any time.

Spyderco was …

Fiber optics sights have recently grown in popularity for use on all types of firearms. These sights have been around for quite a long time and they offer a reasonably priced alternative to many of the factory sights that may be difficlt to see in certain lighting conditions. My first experience with fiber optic sights were on an old Ithaca 37 Deerslayer Riotgun. At that time I was shooting a lot of 2 and 3 gun matches, so one Thursday I stopped at one of the local "cop shops" and found this police trade-in Ithaca with a cracked stock and …
