Custom Dial Craziness

Posted by George Poulos on

For a number of years now, rifle owners have enjoyed a Custom Dial System (CDS) from Leupold. Leupold’s Custom Dial System helps you easily compensate for bullet drop and make ultra-quick adjustments in the field. They will customize your scope’s elevation dial to match your exact load, velocity, and conditions for precision shooting. So, once you range your target, simply turn the dial to the correct position, aim dead on, and squeeze the trigger. So the CDS boasts dead-on hits, every time and without holdover! The CDS dial features ¼-MOA click increment finger adjustments and has no adjustment covers to lose, making their VX-2, VX-3, VX-3L, VX-6 and VX-R models very popular for outdoorsmen.

Well the coolness of having a custom turret tuned to the specific load you are using has become even more popular in recent years and Nikon introduced their XR Custom Turret which replace the original elevation turret with the custom one in a number of their scope models. Combined with their excellent Spot-On Ballistic Match Technology, Nikon can offer their interchangeable turret technology to even better expand a sportman's experience. Currently, Nikon offers the XR Custom turrets in selected ProStaff 5, Monarch 3, Monarch 5 and Monarch 7 models.

It appears that another new entry is from one of my old favorites… Burris. This year they introduced their C4 Plus Series. So far, they have just two scopes in the line-up, but they are in the most popular magnification ranges – a 3-9×40 and a 4.5-14×42. When you purchase one of these models, you receive a promotional code allowing you one FREE custom elevation dial upon request.

These custom turrets systems let hunters match elevation adjustment to their favorite cartridge. By just dialing in the range, there is no longer any need for holdover and helps sportsmen maximize the ballistic potential of a particular cartridge. Hey, if you ask me, it kind of takes the fun out of it! What would my old hunting buddies have to kid me about if I never miss anymore?
